Located in a valley in the western foothills, MSAD #39 serves the rural communities of Buckfield, Hartford, and Sumner. Two schools (Hartford-Sumner Elementary and Buckfield Junior Senior High School) provide education for just over 600 students, pre-kindergarten through grade 12 and beyond. As a small school district, our instruction is geared for small class sizes and individualized programming.
The MSAD #39 half-day pre-kindergarten program, one of the first publicly funded programs in the state, provides socialization opportunities and intensive early literacy instruction. MSAD #39 has a district-wide integrated day treatment model of service delivery for special education students. The Pupil Evaluation Team makes referrals to day treatment given a criteria of needs. The elementary school has been recognized by the Maine Reading Association for its comprehensive literacy program, including Reading Recovery, which provides intensive; skill based reading instruction to all children.
In conjunction with MSAD #17, our high school students have opportunities to participate in the Oxford Hill Comprehensive High School applied vocation programs. A varied program that includes opportunities for advanced course work, foreign language (French and Spanish), and comprehensive visual and performing arts programs, make the Buckfield Junior Senior High an environment appealing to students with a variety of interests.
An elementary after school program is available for parents seeking day care opportunities and students wishing to enroll in a wide range of enrichment programs. This fee-based program operates from 2:30-6:00 p.m.
Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) scores for MSAD #39 are consistently at state average. All of our schools are currently identified by the Department of Education as having made "adequate yearly progress". All staff are involved in continuous training and honing of skills. In support of the training, MSAD #39 provides more than 120 summer training days each year.
Athletic programs in MSAD #39 offer a broad range of interscholastic athletics including soccer, golf, basketball, cheering, baseball, and softball. As a small school, our programs provide children opportunities to participate and compete in a variety of athletic programs where sportsmanship and skill development are held in esteem.
